As much as we’ve all seen the new age trend of sporting grey hair or the salt and pepper look, it turns out to be fun only when it is not forced upon us by nature’s cruelty! We would all love to age gracefully by proudly flaunting our silver tresses but to have to deal with it in our younger years is a different story altogether. It adds years to your age and makes you stand out amongst your peers for all the wrong reasons.

Premature graying has been linked to various psychological side effects. From inferiority complexes to lack of self-confidence and performance levels, the color in our tresses seems to be more than what we take for granted. This, in turn, affects one’s social and professional life and sometimes even personal life. What is worse, owing to the various factors such as pollution, daily stress, climate change, and unhealthy diets and exercise regimes, the percentage of people facing premature graying has increased significantly in the past few years.

Below are a few poses or asanas from yoga for premature gray hair that will aid us in preventing or reversing the damage done to our hair, amongst other benefits.

Ustrasana (Camel Pose):

  • Kneel on your yoga mat, maintaining a distance of about 6 inches between your knees, like the rest.
  • Arch backward and use both hands to hold the respective ankles on each side and raise your head to look at the ceiling.
  • Push your tummy forward while keeping your thigh muscles firm and straight.
  • Take a few breaths as you maintain your posture and gradually get back to the original position. It is suggested that those facing problems with low blood pressure, neck or back injuries and migraine problems are to avoid this particular asana.

Halasana (Plough Pose):

  • Lie down on your back. Place your arms by your sides with your palms facing the ground.
  • Pull your legs up, but ensure that they are at a 90-degree angle to the surface. Continue pushing your legs backward. The aim is to have your toes touch the surface, beyond your head. A trick is to curl your body in by pressing your chin against your throat as much as possible.
  • If you place your elbows on the ground and use them to prop up your back, you will be able to maintain the posture for longer
  • Breathe regularly a few times before getting back to the starting position.

 Trikonasana (Triangle Pose):

  • Stand straight with your feet placed away from each other with a gap of about 3 feet.
  • Form a parallel with both your arms raised above your head.
  • Tilt your body completely to the right and touch your toes. Raise your left hand to face the ceiling and turn your head to look upwards at it.
  • 60 seconds is the ideal time for you to hold the asana before you get back to a standing position and repeat in the opposite direction.

Kapalbhati (Fire of breath):

  • Sit on the floor with both your legs crossed (padmasana).
  • Breathe out quickly with force and in succession while trying to keep a regular pace while doing the same.
  • You will notice that you will breathe in between each exhalation almost as an involuntary reaction.
  • Beginners can aim to keep up the rhythm for about 3 minutes and gradually increase the time.

The fire of breath technique pushes blood to our scalp region, helping in prolonging the process of graying.

  • Sit cross-legged on the floor. Close your eyes and place both palms on your lap.
  • Breathe in and out in rhythm and ensure that when you exhale, you work our abdominal muscles by compressing them.
  • Repeat the steps 15 times in succession.


  • Lie down on a flat surface facing the ceiling, hands beside yourself and your feet together.
  • Take a deep breath as you bring your knees towards your stomach, folding them over your body.


  • Do the dog pose – kneel facing the ground and place your palms ahead of you so that they rest on the ground and support your body.
  • Straighten your knees so that the bulk of your body weight is held by your hands.
  • Ensure that your feet are flat against the ground from toe to heel.
  • Hold the position for a few seconds until the body relaxes.
  • Revert to the original position slowly and repeat asana.

Prasarita Padashastana:

  • Stand upright and place your feet slightly wide apart.
  • Take a breath in as you stretch your hands towards the ceiling.
  • As you breathe out, bend towards the floor as you try to touch the floor with your hands.
  • Hold the pose until your body relaxes in position.

  • Lie down on the floor with your hands resting straight, next to you, as you face the ceiling.
  • Lift both your legs while keeping them straight and point at the ceiling with your toes. Keep your spine as straight as possible while supporting your back with your hands. Inhale as you lift your legs and exhale as you straighten your back.
  • Hold the position for a few seconds.
  • Revert to the original position and repeat 8 – 10 times.
